LET'S UNITE OUR EFFORTS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRYSTALLOGRAPHY TO MEET THE NEW SOCIETAL CHALLENGES OF THE AFRICAN CONTINENT
The understanding of the physico-chemical properties of materials inevitably involves the analysis of their structural organisations, often determined by X-ray diffraction and scattering. This aspect concerns different types of functional materials: natural or heritage materials, pharmaceutical molecules or macromolecules, agro-food, photovoltaic and magnetic materials, nanomaterials for new technologies, etc. In this context, Crystallography occupies a central place and contribute to the development of several disciplinary sectors such as: Physics, Material Science, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Molecular biology and Mineralogy. These disciplines are closely connected to industry, health, engineering and environment, education and training and the harnessing of new technologies essential for the economic development of our countries or in the societal needs such as health, Energy, environment or emerging technologies. Thus, Crystallography plays a unifying role which should inspire us to unite our efforts to respond effectively to the various emerging expectations as well as to societal challenges in Africa. Let's take advantage of this event to establish real and effective partnerships between our academic and research institutions, share our expertise and our complementary knowledge, but why not involve our industrial partners to spur innovation in Africa and even think about African mutualized large instrumental facilities…

What is PCCr4?

The Fourth Pan-African Conference on Crystallography (PCCr4) is an upcoming event that marks a significant milestone in the field of crystallography across Africa. Set to be held in Algiers, Algeria, in 2025, this conference builds on the success of previous meetings, with the first one kicking off in Cameroon in 2016, followed by events in Ghana in 2019 and Kenya in 2023. PCCr4 aims to serve as a vibrant forum for researchers, scientists, and students from across the continent and around the globe to exchange knowledge, share the latest scientific advancements, and collaborate on the multifaceted applications of crystallography.
Purpose and Goals of PCCr4:
The main purpose of PCCr4 is to advance the field of crystallography in Africa. Crystallography is a foundational science that plays a crucial role in understanding the structures of materials at the atomic or molecular level. This knowledge is essential for a wide range of scientific endeavors, from developing new pharmaceuticals to creating innovative materials and understanding geological formations.
Objectives of PCCr4 include:

Statement on Gender Balance for PCCr4

At PCCr4, we are dedicated to promoting crystallography across the African continent and ensuring equal opportunities for all participants, regardless of gender. In alignment with the IUCr's policy on gender balance, we have implemented several actions to support and encourage the participation of women in crystallography.
Drawing on the successful initiatives from previous conferences and feedback from organizing committees, we aim to create a program that reflects gender diversity and inclusion. Specifically, our approach includes the following measures :​

Plenary Lectures: We will ensure that male and female scientists deliver the plenary lectures.

Microsymposia presentations: We strive to achieve at least 50% female representation among the presenters in the microsymposia.

Bursary selection: The IUCr criteria for gender balance will be rigorously applied in selecting bursary recipients, prioritizing young scientists attending the meeting.
IUCr Scientific Freedom Policy Statement
The organizing committee of PCCr4 adheres to the fundamental policy of non-discrimination, affirming the right and freedom of scientists to engage in international scientific activities without regard to ethnic origin, religion, citizenship, language, political stance, gender, sex, or age, as per the Statutes of the International Council for Science. We commit to ensuring that no barriers exist at this conference that would prevent the participation of bona fide scientists.
